Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
