EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
