Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
